Young Blood investigates children, teenagers and young adults raised amid economic decomposition in the neighbourhoods of Michigan’s auto towns. Adolescence and early adulthood, with their fragile uncertainty and exciting potential, mirror the rebuilding of the region. Dan Farnum meets his subjects in the streets or empty lots, often without adult supervision; he grew up skateboarding in many of these locations. A regional look at becoming an adult in economically challenged communities: Saginaw, Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Ypsilanti and the Detroit metropolitan area, all once part of the auto industry, photographed over ten years.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
