Text by Maureen R. Drennan

An intimate photographic look at a reclusive marijuana grower in California, an isolated man whose environment was both ominous and verdant. Maureen R. Drennan photographed him for nine years while the laws and stigma around marijuana cultivation changed radically in California. The farmer, Ben, was growing marijuana long before it was legal and had to navigate the legal system carefully to grow, maintain, sell and transport his product; it continues to be a murky world. American literature has a significant influence on the imagery: narratives in which characters are crafted out of place, or in which places become characters themselves.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
