Text by Andrew Widener and Nicholas Widener

Nicholas Widener uses photo-genealogy to excavate his family roots. Combining archival letters, old family photographs and objects with his own portraits and landscapes, he tells the story of his ancestral origins in the Black Belt region of Alabama. His brother Andrew Widener, a genealogist at the Daughters of the American Revolution, has researched the family for over a decade; riding with him to the Black Belt, the stories he gathered turned into images. Influenced by William Christenberry, Walker Evans, Sally Mann and William Eggleston, the book seeks to situate the photographer among the generations before and after him.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
