When the last Space Shuttle took off from Kennedy Space Center in 2011, a generation defined by the dreams of the Space Age lost the most potent symbol of its identity. The project looks at the landscape of Florida’s “Space Coast” in the wake of the closing of the shuttle programme. In his stories Memories of the Space Age, J.G. Ballard described a near future in which the infrastructure of the US space programme is abandoned, its gantries left to decay into the Florida swamp; the slow decline of the programme and its effects on the local economy and landscape have made many of his descriptions eerily prescient. Derelict motels, overgrown jungles and dead satellites: photographs of in-between states, a nostalgia for the future. With a text by Margaret Lazarus Dean.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
