Text by Bruce Thorn, Patty Carroll

Patty Carroll’s work entangles women and home. The photographs of Anonymous Women: Domestic Demise comment on the mania of collecting, accumulating and decorating a home, where the objects take over and the woman is surrounded or crushed by her own possessions and obsessions, leading to disaster, mishaps and mayhem. The still-life narratives are reimagined interiors filled with décor, engulfing a lone woman camouflaged with only bits of her visible: both victim and invisible creator, pathetic and humorous. The sequence follows her path from glee to gloom. Influences include vintage movies, still-life painting, decorating magazines, a suburban upbringing and the game of Clue; the work draws attention to the unseen heroic women who silently run a home, and to how possessions can substitute for identity.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
