For the first time, Markéta Luskačová's much-celebrated explorations of childhood are gathered together. The catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the same name at Stills in Edinburgh, the first gallery in Scotland to show her work.

From the 1960s onward she devoted long stretches of her working life to the experience of children. Working in her native Czech lands as well as across Slovakia and Britain, she turned the recording of play, friendship and worship into one of her most prominent themes. In more than thirty pictures selected from an archive spanning 1967 to 2004, childhood appears as a universal experience, one that remains fundamentally similar across time and place. Much of the work here had never been published before.

The binding is deliberately unusual: both the top and the outside edge are left untrimmed, so that little pockets form between the spreads. The paper doubles up, which reduces show-through and creates a hidden page.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
