By The Sea: Photographs from the North East by Czech-born photographer Markéta Luskačová, long resident in the United Kingdom, gathers her photographs from the late seventies on the north-east coast of England. Luskačová first travelled to North East England at the invitation of photographer Chris Killip, then living in the area. She fell in love with Whitley Bay and with the people there who, in spite of the harsh weather, took their holidays by the sea: shopkeepers selling boiled water to women who brought tea and teabags from home, families on the sand, children on donkeys, gangs of teenagers, the small economies and the long pleasures of an English seaside resort. The work is well known in photographic circles but has lacked the wider exposure of some of her contemporaries; the book and the accompanying Martin Parr Foundation exhibition were part of a recent resurgence of interest in Luskačová's work, introducing it to new audiences. The black-and-white photographs are made with the gentle, attentive humanism that has long characterised her practice.
