Japanese artist Yutaka Takanashi has always photographed the city — from near, from far, even from a moving car — sometimes stalking a poetic image, sometimes picking up a piece of reality. As he has constantly repeated, these two approaches confront each other in his work: poetry and realism, mirror and window, visible and invisible. The important thing for him is to make his way through the terrain, to walk on the mainland in order to take anonymous pictures.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
