Since starting his photographic practice in the late 1950s, Takanashi has used various methodologies in a numerous series of works, which all consistently addressed the "city". He has always explored the interface between observation and participation in photography. In this current series, which was informed by Masahiko Shimada's novel Looking for a Niche (2012) and Jun Tanaka's ecological analysis of the city, Takanashi has focused on searching for niches in the city.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
