Between 2016 and 2020, the artist Nina Ferrer-Gleize carried out research and creation work on the family farm, now run by her uncle, a dairy farmer. On a wall of the house, a reproduction of the painting The Gleaners by Millet. It has always been there, we don't really know why anymore. On his uncle's desk, a contract with Danone, which he doesn't really want to sign; he knows why. Based on the history of this famous painting and the daily work of an Ardèche breeder, an investigation is constructed, composed in the present of the textual and photographic account of the 4 summers spent on this farm, and in the past of an essay nourished by the literature and art of the 19th century. Gleaners, contracts, milk, signatures and tracings, tools, peasants writing and photographing, cow names, walls full of cuts: that makes a book. Graphic design: Thomas Leblond Produced with the support of the National Center for Visual Arts, the Auvergne–Rhône–Alpes Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs and the Aix–Marseille Interdisciplinary Center for Literature Studies (UR 4235).

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
