Assembly is a sweeping overview of Jackie Nickerson’s photography over the last three decades, tracing her fascination with identity and the physical and psychic spaces of working environments. It consists of three thematic volumes—Earth, Emerge, Circle. At the core of Earth are Nickerson’s acclaimed “Farm” portraits, showing agricultural laborers in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa wearing self-made clothes. Emerge, framed by series on circus performers and the streetscapes of Shanghai, centers on “Faith,” her depiction of Irish Catholic monastic life. The final volume, Circle, includes “Ten Miles Round,” an exploration of farming and fishing communities in County Louth, Ireland; her documentation of healthcare workers during the 2014 Ebola epidemic in Liberia; and “Salvage,” studio portraits in which she obstructs her sitters’ faces with salvaged objects to question how materiality influences one’s sense of self.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
