First published in 2002, this is a new edition of Roni Horn’s handbook of identity, This is Me, This is You. With this inventively bound twinned volume, we have a book with no end. Peruse the 48 portraits Horn made with a point-and-shoot camera, and as you arrive at the last image, turn the book over and begin again: now with a complement of each of the 48 images taken a few seconds later, just minimally different, and presented in the same sequence. Horn made these portraits of her niece Georgia Loy Horn from 1997–2000 when she was between the ages of eight and ten; Georgia moves playfully between different moods and characters, embodying a spectrum of identities. Through the dual structure of the book, Horn ensures that we can never see the pairs simultaneously: we shift back and forth, our memory of one image coloring our perception of its twin.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
