This is a new and re-designed edition of Mary Ellen Mark’s debut book Passport, first published in 1974 by Lustrum Press, New York. The publication features a collection of Mark’s early work, shot on her journeys between 1963 and ’73, mainly in Turkey where she traveled for a year on a Fulbright scholarship. These photographs quickly drew attention for their persuasive humanism and Mark’s ability to avoid cliché when depicting cultures exotic to her own, a challenge she navigated by aiming to capture “something that evokes a certain kind of memory or response that’s universal”—be the subject immigrants on their way to a new life in Istanbul, bathers in the Ganges, or a man and his monkey begging in Kathmandu. For this edition the original 56-page travel diary has been extended to 120 pages and features an additional text by Ralph Gibson, founder of Lustrum Press.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
