"At home, I would always linger to stare at an old photograph of some of my Andalusian relatives. Over the years this photograph has given me an image of how I think Andalusia might be.

SW is the result of approximately three years of research in the south of Spain, an area I did not know and where I have never lived, but which is my family's place of origin and their current place of residence.

To travel through Andalusia now that the global world has left its mark everywhere, even here, led me to reflect on the clash between contradictory elements in this land, that appears to hang in a balance between reality and fiction and that, wherever we go, lingers like the background of a film." Alvaro Deprit

This Project is the winner of the Second Fotocanal Photobook Competition 2017, organized by the Comunidad de Madrid and Ediciones Anómalas.

Alvaro Deprit (Madrid, 1977). He studies German Philology and Sociology. His work has been exhibited in festivals and galleries in Arles, Roma, Barcelona, Madrid, London and New York.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
