Eighth installment of The trivial essays collection

JC+ is the eighth installment in Cristóbal Hara's collection The trivial essays.

Photographic language, specifically the language of photography that strives to be documentary, is limited by many rules and conventions. The work of Cristobal Hara focuses on the search for alternatives to the conventions of his time. In The trivial essays, the essay form, naturally shorter than a book, allows him to isolate and deal with different aspects of a photographer's craft by illustrating them with images, some of which are known while others have never been shown, that constitute a sample of his work of over 40 years.

In JC+ he illustrates how cultural changes modify representational standards. This essay must not in any case be interpreted as a lack of respect towards religion or its practitioners.

Cristóbal Hara was born in Madrid in 1946. After a childhood and youth spent living in The Philippines, Germany and the U.S.A, he settled back in Spain in 1980. In 1985 he abandoned black and white photography for colour, showing the considerable influence of the Spanish pictorial and cultural tradition. This was a change which marked a turning point in the search for his stylistic language. As well as having his work published in international publications, Hara has produced several books, including Vanitas, 4 cosas de España, Contranatura, Autobiography, and An imaginary Spaniard. His works can be found in the collections of institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
