It's surprising how often memories appear to us in visual form, similar to snapshots in the psyche that only time can erase. After careful reflection, sight is not only the product of the activity of our eyes — it is also and above all the gaze of our mind through memory. This visual nature of the past gives shape to our memories yet does not fit, in appearance, with blindness; hence Riccardo Svelto wanted to probe this aspect, trying to tell the fear of losing sight. But how can the loss of sight be told visually? Starting from this apparently irresolvable contradiction, the search for a visual narration of the fear of losing sight is closely linked to memory. The title is drawn from the last story in Raymond Carver's Cathedral. Winner FOLIO PhMuseum 2020. Award Books & Others ICA Milano, Best book 2021. PHotoESPAÑA 2022, shortlisted.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
