Hungarian visual artist Máté Bartha (b. 1987, Budapest; MA Photography, MOME 2011; MA Documentary Film, SzFE 2016) undertakes a chance-based photographic pilgrimage through grief and memory navigating Budapest. Losing both parents at an early age, Bartha traces a family lineage of loss guided by the roll of dice determining each destination, spiraling inward toward the city's center where his childhood began. Fragments from his personal archive — childhood drawings of spirals and mazes, his mother's architectural drawings, his father's winter photographs — interweave with new images as signposts across the metropolis.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
