Through powerful portraits and incredible surf scenes, Brown W. Cannon III's book 'NORTH' chronicles the lives of surf people - and the community around them - along the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. For the past 6 years Brown has photographed portraits against a 3x9 meter seamless gray background. You are able to study every detail of equipment, their faces and feel their power. The large format (31.8 x 43.2 cm) of this book transports the observer into the inner circle of the North Shore, making the strength of the waves and the people almost physically perceptible. In addition to Cannon's decades-long passion for surfing and photography, 'NORTH' is inspired by his family roots, which have made Hawai’i home since the 1920’s.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
