A series of portraits of Marilyn Monroe in the intimacy of an unmade bed, taken by the American photographer Douglas Kirkland on the evening of 17 November 1961, when he was twenty-seven. For Kirkland every photo session was a dance, a magical and unrepeatable waltz between photographer and subject, and the idea of dance becomes the guiding thread of this new volume, conceived as a leporello. The portfolio of images, accompanied by Kirkland's handwritten words, unfolds without interruption, turning the act of reading into an immersive, almost choreographic visual experience and drawing the reader into the brief, seductive encounter between a young photographer and the most iconic woman in Hollywood history.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
