Mazu, the sea goddess who arrived in Taiwan from the Chinese mainland three centuries ago, is seen today not only as the protector of fishermen and sailors, but as the guardian deity of Taiwan as a whole. Over a period of geopolitical instability heightened by U.S. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei in 2022, Wei-Lun made this series of postcards to ask for Mazu's protection. The photographs document his personal journey and investigation into the impact of Pelosi's visit on himself and other Taiwanese people. In line with Taoist tradition, Wei-Lun attached stamps made of gold joss paper to the postcards and set them alight, delivering them to Mazu. Winner of Landskrona Foto & Breadfield Dummy Award 2024.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
