Frans Zwartjes (born in Alkmaar in 1927) is a filmmaker, musician, violin maker, draughtsman, painter and sculptor. In the late sixties he caused a furore with artistic black-and-white films in which heavily made-up and over-dressed actors are caught in a web of sexually loaded power games, with hysteria, psychosis and cruelty among his regular themes; Susan Sontag called him the most important experimental filmmaker of his time. The book consists of a selection of photographs he took during his years of filming, accompanied by a short film on DVD from 1969.
