A homage to the talented photographer Esther Kroon, killed during a field trip in Guatemala in 1992. She studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and specialised in children's portraits taken in Barcelona and Amsterdam, among other places, characterised by extremely low viewpoints and a combination of flash and daylight influenced by her tutor Rineke Dijkstra, for whom she also worked as an assistant. A first book, containing 35 photographs, had been published earlier; this one contains 137 photos, most never released before. The last seven, printed in full colour, were taken with her classmate Hatta Fokker in New York.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
