Every woman inherits two X chromosomes, one of which can be paternal. Alba Zari uses photography as a visual method of investigation and self-analysis to research the father she never met — the missing Y chromosome. She has a few clues: his name, the Iraqi nationality, and his work with Emirates Airlines. Raised in Bangkok, she found out at 25 that she doesn't share the same Thai blood as her brother. She studies her family album with the physiognomy method to identify features that could be traces of her father. She did the DNA test of her ancestral origins; at last she points the lens on herself to reconstruct, from the features of her face, the 3D avatar of her father.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
