Nature groups together this family of images: life, growth, adolescence, adulthood, death and nature itself, which is born, dies and is born again stronger, mutating and evolving to survive. Thirty years ago the community of Playa Blanca began with a small group of people who decided to settle on this paradisiacal beach where the sea and nature reign. Despite every social, political and inhuman imposition, they chose to stay in the land where they found their roots and, like a great fierce tree, they resist every storm, growing stronger with each wind that tries to bring them down. After all, who says what paradise is? Playa Blanca is a documentary photography book about personal paradise, community, nature and the struggle to be who we want to be. It takes place in Playa Blanca, Barú Island, on the Colombian Caribbean in 2013. When Pablo arrives on the island he finds the community facing an eviction order to make way for a seven-star hotel and a private beach, and the State's refusal to recognise it formally as a community. This is where the record begins, documenting the reality of the families and making visible a community with more than thirty years of history.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
