Toys are part of the history of humankind: for centuries they were made of natural materials such as wood, seeds, clay, bones or stones. The introduction of plastic changed their production so much that today more than 90% of toys are made of it. Plastic being indestructible, all these toys go on existing after a short useful life and end up in the environment like much of our waste: they fragment and transform, often reaching the oceans, where they drift on the currents until they run aground on beaches around the world. Between 2013 and 2018 the author recovered and recycled marine debris on Mexican beaches facing the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Among thousands of pieces of waste and colourful plastic fragments, the toys caught his attention for their look of archaeological objects, and he began to collect and photograph each of them. Sharing them with his son Miguel, then three years old, he was struck by the boy's enormous excitement and the idea was born to save as many of them as possible and give them a new life.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
