Text by Hiroshi Sugimoto

Fascinated by questions of time and memory in photography, Sugimoto expresses his own vision of the world through the lens. With this idea he began the Theaters series in 1976 at the Saint Marks cinema in New York, with an exposure corresponding to the length of the film: a screen turns to pure white light, and the empty auditorium of the old picture palace is left standing around it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
