What do paintings mean in the age of photography? How do photographs change the visual language of a painting? Richard Misrach’s Pictures of Paintings presents photographs of masterpieces in various museums, especially of the American West, as well as the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Misrach photographed details of paintings in order to question them anew, not primarily to learn something new about an artist’s style or technique but as a means of understanding cultural values such as race, gender, religion or power. By overcoming the boundary between traditional image analysis and current forms of art appropriation, Misrach reopens the discussion of representation.
