Berlin as seen by Michael Schmidt is a wide urban space that after its destruction in the Second World War has not yet been filled again, or only without ideas. Gaps between houses and firewalls point to the magnificent buildings that once stood there. The photographer shows unadorned new development, bleak open spaces, deserted street canyons and the ruin of the Anhalter Bahnhof. Schmidt documents how the war is still present decades later in the absence of human living space for the city’s inhabitants. Berlin nach 45, made in 1980, is a main work by Michael Schmidt and is published here in full for the first time.
