A Grocer's Orgy is an artist book that presents an alternate history of Lucas Blalock's photography with new photographs and previously unseen versions of images from throughout his work. Its title comes from Baudelaire's writings on dandyism, and the book is designed by Blalock to create new formal and thematic associations by collaging his already densely layered photographs. It links his earliest studio portraits with recent pictures that use overt digital alterations, building on his approach of embedding additional photographs in the back of a single frame; erasures, cloning and drawing stress what is absent or obliterated, often with a poignancy that most digital imagery lacks, and spreads that obscure where one image ends and the next begins complicate the pictures further. The cover is red with a photograph of a lump of ground meat with a hole in it, and the spreads shown online include a pink foam slab pierced by two red straws on newspaper and a gray-blue jacket with lavender and burgundy pockets against red cloth.
