Stay away from nothing follows the relationship between the artists Paul Thek and Peter Hujar through their letters and photographs, from 1956 to 1975. It opens with a sequence of pictures by Hujar of the two of them at play in Coral Gables and beyond, then moves through playful postcards from Thek in 1960 and his first letter to Hujar in 1962, written aboard a containership in Philadelphia harbor bound for Europe. The pair eventually meet in Rome, and the remaining letters trace Thek's travels, romances, work and money troubles. More than fifty letters and postcards, with drawings and other ephemera, are reproduced alongside Hujar's photographs of Thek in Italy, in studios and on the beaches of Fire Island: the classic images of Thek in the catacombs of Palermo, studio portraits of the artist making The Tomb, and dozens of pictures unpublished until now, among them candid portraits and the two friends goofing around or posing for passport photos. An afterword by Andrew Durbin, biographer of both artists, closes the book. The cover is a grid of nine black-and-white portraits of a young man on a black ground, and the pages shown online include a wooded landscape with a standing man and a reclining figure.
