Over three years Vasily Ilyinsky built a many-sided portrait of the 76th Guards Air Assault Division, one of the oldest units of the Russian airborne forces, known from its base near Pskov. Training exercises, the division's own holiday, the start of family life and reunions with friends alternate with further exercises in a book about men described as brave, skilled and always ready for war - not the easiest or safest profession. Formed in 1939 as a rifle division and converted to an airborne role in the late 1940s, the division was then relocated to Pskov; the photographer, a biology graduate who completed his own military service in 2006-2007, has worked since 2014 with the German agency Focus after earlier assignments for Grinberg and the Russian Ministry of Defence's information service.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
