The Polish photographer Rafał Milach spent several years working across post-Soviet Russia and the former Warsaw Pact states; 7 Rooms follows seven young people from Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Krasnoyarsk, born in the USSR, raised during perestroika and starting their adult lives in Putin's Russia. As the writer Liza Faktor puts it in her text on the book, Milach spent six years with these people in three cities, thirty-somethings who became, for him, intermediaries between an ineradicable Soviet mindset and the gathering unease of today's Russia - an almost impossible attempt to reproduce his search visually, yielding instead a haunting, barely distinct image of a lost path and of a tender, exasperating attachment to the country.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
