A project about homeless people living on the slope of a wide ravine in a small Moscow park, where a makeshift camp has sheltered ten to twelve permanent residents for some twenty years, with another six regular visitors; its inhabitants call it the Ravine, or the Clearing. Each came there for different reasons - "we come here to get away from our pain" - and residents describe advantages alongside the hardship: nature all around, and no one to disturb their peace. The photographer began shooting in April 2015, when the camp was six tents built from cardboard, plywood, boards, carpets, cellophane and other materials scavenged from the dump, each with its own improvised clay-and-brick stove for warmth and cooking; police periodically clear the site, and the camp reappears a little further on.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
