Text by Anouchka Grose

In 1991 the photographer began placing ads in British papers and magazines seeking 'genuine couples' willing to be photographed having sex. Of the many who replied, five couples agreed, most inviting him into their homes and one to a local reservoir on a freezing November day. The results are non-idealized, both raw and touching, printed in a slim, intimate volume that tries, as the accompanying text observes, to document something private that isn't meant to be seen.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
