Archival material from the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía collection

En Obra is a graphic memory of Mexico City that portrays the rise and decay of its modernization project through the collection of the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía. What we see here is the material of a little explored, almost unpublished, archive which was protected for several decades. In it, we find images that range from the registration of infrastructure works such as water, drainage, paving, and lighting, to the transformation of public markets. It offers a look at reformatories, prisons, hospitals, fire stations, driver education programs and traffic police actions. It also shows many of the symbolic elements of power: its monuments and civic rituals. Thus, this book constitutes a self-portrait of the State in which the history of the governments of the city and the birth and evolution of the urban trace intersect with the transformation of the daily life of its inhabitants.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
