On the one hand the revisiting of the classical world through literature, on the other the interpretation of an exceptional place through the lens, with the contemporary as the binding agent. The project marked the completion of an important part of the restoration of the excavations of Pompeii, the second most visited artistic site in Italy. "What better location for this Grand Tour project than Pompeii? Great contemporary writers and an internationally renowned artist-photographer were invited to take on the role of traveller and create a testimony for our collective memory: writing and photography like parallel segments destined to converge in our historic memory" (Angelo Cannavacciuolo).

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
