These drawings and inscriptions photographed in this series were left by German prisoners of war, including high ranking SS officers, some of whom would be later tried at Nuremberg. The title is quoted from Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness, in which a character laments the difficulty of communicating one's experiences to others. It can be inferred that those held captive made these drawings as a form of healing, nostalgia, patriotism, fantasy or rebellion, in the absence of anyone else. The cover photograph by Robert Capa, shown by Capa to the artist's grandfather, depicts a surgeon who took the Hippocratic oath and treated SS soldiers as any other patient.
