Interview by Oliver Zybok
From the series Women at the Clothing Factory VEB Treffmodelle Berlin

The themes and motifs of the German photographer are ordinary and everyday, yet in their stillness they convey the utmost tenderness. In 1984 she spent several weeks in a state-owned clothing factory in East Berlin, shooting more than fifteen hundred frames from which she chose fifty. By coming to know the women who worked there and their surroundings, she made touching portraits that reflect the serenity and the beauty of the sitters in brief moments of quiet.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
