Neutral Corner is the fruit of a collaboration between the writer Ignacio Aldecoa and the photographer Ramón Masats, first issued in the Palabra e Imagen series in 1962. Aldecoa introduced Masats to the world of boxing, taking him to various gyms so that he could absorb the particular atmosphere rendered here in grave monochrome pictures, sometimes repeated and transformed by the use of the negative or by recropping. Aldecoa then wrote from the pictures — an unusual practice at a time when photography, when set against a text, was mostly relegated to illustration — so that the volume stands as a work of coherent aesthetics.
