Born in Japan to a Swiss father and a Japanese mother, Favrod grew up in Switzerland largely alongside his mother, who passed on her principles and her culture; that inheritance led him to apply for dual nationality at eighteen. Gaijin, which means foreigner in Japanese, is what came of the application being refused. The book is a fictional account of his search for an identity, built out of staged pictures, family material and invented documents.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
