There are three themes in the series: VOLUME 0 (KYOTO) features photobooks of the 1970s; VOLUME 1 (506070) features photobooks from the 1950s, '60s and '70s; VOLUME 2 (900010) features photobooks from the 1990s, '00s and '10s. Japanese photobooks of the 1960s and '70s continue to have a lasting influence on contemporary Japanese photography. To communicate the vibrancy of this living history, GOLIGA invited book designer Satoshi Machiguchi to reconceptualize the process of design as a live event. Open to the public, Machiguchi (also known as MATCH) photographed spreads from photobooks included in the exhibition. These appropriations were then incorporated into a book layout that was printed and bound during the performance. This contemporary re-rendering of the work is a direct conceptual application of the experiments of the photography forefathers.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
