From 15 January to 12 February 1977 more than 15,000 artists, intellectuals and performers from 55 nations gathered in Lagos for the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture. Marilyn Nance made over 1,500 pictures there, one of the most comprehensive accounts of the event. Drawn from her archive, most of it never published, the selection follows the intensity and the political weight of a festival that took place in the heyday of Nigeria's oil wealth, at the peak of Pan-Africanist expression after a decade of decolonisation on the continent.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
