A vacant lot in the metropolis of Shanghai: a patch of urban wasteland where thousands of Chinese tourists get in and out of tour coaches day after day. As they swarm out into the city, Tatiana Macedo walks between the empty vehicles and photographs their windows. Like the urban surroundings, the interior of each coach takes on a new life through her eye. Reflected in the glass is time, the turning point between past and present, as the ancient city melts into a cliché of modernity with its skyline of the world's tallest buildings.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
