Originally published in 1959, this is a symphony about Lisbon of the fifties, showing the city in its different aspects. The "graphic poem", as Victor Palla and Costa Martins liked to call it, constructs a new city with photographic and poetic images, a city in the process of assimilating an international style. The frames are very modern, grainy, taken in a fast way, choosing spontaneity and instinct over artifact and composition. According to Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, who included it in The Photobook: A History vol. 1, it is particularly notable for using many of the bookmaking ideas developed by William Klein and by Dutch photographers such as Ed van der Elsken and Johan van der Keuken, and has a vibrant, cinematic feeling. This edition follows the first exactly, and adds a supplement in which the authors explain in detail the making of each picture.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
