The second Electa volume devoted to Michele Pellegrino, the photographer from Chiusa di Pesio who for thirty years has obsessively questioned his mountains and the people who hold out there — that is, since he published another great book, Profondo Nord, in 1975. Pellegrino has documented an epochal passage, the twilight of an era, the end of alpine civilisation. He has done so by digging into the inner life of every portrait, catching the intimate history of many single lives in a continuous dialogue with places: from the recording of pure realistic fact the photographer's eye moves towards something closer to a meditation.
