With an essay and an interview with the artist

A mid-career retrospective volume that focuses on the artist's fine art work and reveals a surrealist undercurrent running through it. Sassen recognises Surrealism as one of her earliest influences, and alongside pictures from the acclaimed series Umbra the volume draws on Flamboya, made on her return to Kenya, on Parasomnia, a dreamlike exploration of sleep, and on the Roxane series, a mutual portrait built with her muse. Throughout she appears as a poet of light and shadow and a brilliant technician, master of both vibrant colour and muted hues; the selection was made by the artist herself from the last ten years of work.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
