The book follows the personal and artistic journey of the British maker across the world. That journey is the thread of a deeper reflection on his own identity as part of the universal family of human beings. His travels are like field expeditions, full of preparation and contingency, and can last weeks or months: for him travelling is part of the process, a resolute search for what it means to be human at the core of our shared origins on the African continent.

He shares his continuing search for a form that embraces what he experiences in the field, when he finds a harmony with people, nature and light — a sense of balance that analogue work, in the form of large 10x8 negatives, comes close to expressing and that lets him crystallise every emotion in a single instant. Through his shots the journey also becomes ours, and the indigenous peoples portrayed become the protagonists of a story of beauty without frills.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
