The project began with an archive and a discovery. Sara Davidmann and her siblings inherited letters and pictures belonging to her uncle and aunt, Ken and Hazel Houston, from her mother Audrey. Hazel had been a dental secretary; Ken practised as an optician in Edinburgh. It emerged soon after they married that Ken was transgender, and in the context of a British marriage in the nineteen-fifties this profoundly affected both their own relationship and their relationships with the people around them. They remained together from 1954 to the end of Ken's life, and had no children.

Hazel and Audrey wrote to each other frequently in the late fifties and early sixties, after the discovery; those letters tell a very private story.

“A hybrid of history, archive material and an ongoing investigation into the meanings of an archive.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
