In recent years the photographic volume has reached a standing it never had before, yet photographers are still rarely heard talking about their own work — and they have a great deal to say. Coignet went to meet them, and found that each of them treats the book as an essential form of the work itself.

Photographers, publishers and designers are invited to revisit what they have made and to say what they meant by it. Across the interviews a geography of the present takes shape, continuing the first volume of 2014.

“Why books? Because they are works in themselves, easily reached, which imply the series — a form far more complex and telling than the single image, far more stable and lasting than an exhibition. And because they let you put the turns of a career in perspective.”

With Didier Ben Loulou, Daniel Blaufuks, Broomberg and Chanarin, Patrick Faigenbaum, Joan Fontcuberta, Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt, Erik Kessels, Aron Mörel, Akio Nagasawa, Greger Ulf Nilson, Martin Parr, Christian Patterson, Lise Sarfati, Stéphanie Solinas, Alec Soth, Gerhard Steidl, Eric Tabuchi, Bertien van Manen and Mariken Wessels.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
