An analysis of the many-sided relations between the recorded image and the book. Using pictures in a book is not enough to make a photobook, still less an artist's book. What is a photobook, if it is not just a book? What is a picture, if it is not just an image?

This essay analyses those relations and composes a plural study on the nature of the medium and the status of the photobook. Twelve authors from different backgrounds collaborated on the edition, each having met at one point or another in their professional life this duality of image and text, and with it the protean nature of the use of pictures as much as the ambivalence of the book as an object.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
